you can take the girl out of jersey, but you can't take the jersey out of the girl

'cause EVERYTHING IS RENT!!!!!

2006-07-12 The current mood of meredithelaine at www.imood.com

the birthday festivities are starting early in my world. and i'm loving it! since the touring company of RENT is in town this week, eric took me out to dinner, and then to see the show last night. RENT is pretty much the be-all, end-all of musicals for me (along with Jesus Christ Superstar), so this was a HUMONGOUS treat for me.

we both got dressed up nice for the THEE-AH-TAH (imagine that's being said with a pretentious accent). if anyone remembers the black dress i wore for my friend jenny's wedding back in february 2005, that's the dress i wore. i paid $30 for that thing back in 1999, and i've gotten so much use out of it. i wore them with my black wedge-heel sandals, which are uncomfortable as fuck to walk around downtown san diego in, but looked supercute with the dress.

eric told me i looked beautiful. the night could have ended right then and i would have been happy.

eric looked absolutely dashing in his black suit. he wore a dark red shirt with it, and a "Justice League" tie that had silouhettes of the characters all over it. with his brand new black airwalk sneakers (i LOVE the suit with sneakers look. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!), with the laces replaced with the ones he bought at the same time he bought the sneakers. they're purple. one has flowers on it, the other has sparkles. i have the other set of laces (heh), i just have to get an ideal pair of sneakers to put them on.

ANYWAY, not that you NEEDED the fashion report. but you got it anyway. long story short, we looked fantastic. and of course, dumbass over here (meaning ME) didn't even THINK to bring a camera or take pictures or anything.

RENT was great. and eric really liked it, which made me very pleased, since my friends from college and i were all pretty much OBSESSED with it back in the day. so i lip-synched the entire show and bounced around in my seat. it was opening night, so the show was not without its glitches -- one of the main character's mics died, so he had to use a handheld for about 1/2 of the first act. but it was all good.

some of the performers were a bit subpar, in my opinion. you have to understand that i have seen the show 5 or 6 times at this point, PLUS i own the original broadway cast soundtrack, the movie, and the movie cast soundtrack. hell, i even have an mp3 of "seasons of love" being sung by the JAPANESE cast! so basically, i KNOW how mimi is supposed to sound, and how angel is supposed to dance and play his drums, etc.

but that's really neither here nor there. because i STILL got teary-eyed. i still laughed. and my face literally HURT from smiling so big. i think that amused eric quite a bit. i was a big dork, geeking out on her favorite musical.

it was a beautiful evening in san diego. i was at the theater, seeing my favorite show, with my favorite guy, who looked absolutely amazing, and made me feel so special. WHY WOULDN'T I SMILE SO HUGE????

there's one part in the show, where one character says to the other, "you can take the girl out of Hicksville, but you can't take the Hicksville out of the girl." now, if you're from the tri-state area (NY/NJ/CT), this is amusing to you, because Hicksville in a town on Long Island. but when RENT is touring around the country, the likelihood that people in san diego, or miami, or topeka, kansas would get that is REALLY slim.

so what do they change the line to, to get the same sort of mwahahaha! kind of reaction from the crowd? well, they need to reference a place that is known, or is at least STEREOTYPED, as being really cheesy. so the line has become:

"you can take the girl out of JERSEY, but you can't take the JERSEY out of the girl!"

many of you will recognize this line, because i use it ALL THE TIME. it's the motto of my myspace blog. and it's on my banner for the Clix Top 200 Blogs (don't forget to click at the end of the entry and vote for me)!

so when that line was said, i screamed:
"WOO!"

the crowd at a RENT show tends to scream and hoot and holler throughout the whole thing. we, as a crowd, don't hold back. but i was the ONLY one in the crowd who cheered at the jersey line, i can guarantee you that.

just proving that the line is 100% completely true.
