you can take the girl out of jersey, but you can't take the jersey out of the girl

i imagine what my body would sound like slamming against those rocks

2005-06-01 The current mood of meredithelaine at www.imood.com

as most of you know, i worked for a legal staffing firm before i moved back to new jersey (think temp agency for attorneys and paralegals). i did mostly administrative work, some payroll duties, scheduling interviews, checking references, etc. basically i was an assistant to the staffing people.

the company i interviewed with specializes in administrative/secretarial/low-level accounting for the most part. in other words, fields i know a bit about. HOWEVER - this is a PERMANENT PLACEMENT firm. the clients are not looking for admins to fill in for a maternity leave, etc. they're looking to HIRE.

so we're talking commission here.

we're also talking SALES CALLS. COLD CALLING. things that strike fear in my people-pleasing heart. the fear of sounding like an ass who doesn't know what they're talking about. the fear of coming off like an airhead (who, again, doesn't know what they're talking about).

i'm getting clarification on the offer, but this looks like how it's broken down:

salary: 35K (which is what i was making in philly)

10% bonus (i'm assuming this is a "sign-on" bonus; i know a lot of companies use this to sweeten the deal) - so, $3500 (which, would pay off most of my credit card debt)

100% benefits PAID BY THE COMPANY (for a girl who's currently trying to keep from getting pregnant and also trying to keep my chemicals in balance, this is a VERY good thing)

company matches my 401K (up to 3%)

commission: the general fee to a client for a placement, from what they told me, is 20% of whatever the client is going to pay their new hire (so if they're going to pay their new admin 20K, then the fee would be $4000 - if my math is correct). from what i understand, the company takes 50% of that as profit, 5% goes towards the company paying the benefits, and the remaining 45% goes to me (or me and another recruiter, depending on who's candidate fills the position, and who's client it's for). so, in this example, MY cut would be $1800.

i THINK this is how it works. like i said, i'm going to get clarification.

the company is about 1/2 hour from where i live (with no traffice) - but even so, it's an easy drive. since it's NOT temp, there shouldn't be any mad-panic-moments to fill a job order - so hopefully, late nights will be kept to a minimum.

but again -- the COLD CALLING. *shudder* i can not stress how much this SCARES me. and is something that i actually DREAD doing. i did a bit of it when i worked in advertising - and HATED it.

i'll get a script to use when calling, at first, and develop my own style as time goes on. my potential boss said that the summer would be a good time for me to start, because it'll be slow, and it will give me a chance to really learn before the fall comes and there are more jobs to fill.

so that's it, in a nutshell. more on this a little later - right now i have to go to the chiropractor i can't afford.

in closing, i give you the MeredithElaine Word-To-The-Wise Tip Of The Day: do NOT, under ANY circumstances, listen to michelle branch at 8:35 in the morning. you'll cry.
