you can take the girl out of jersey, but you can't take the jersey out of the girl

tonight, tonight, it's on tonight

Alicia Keys -- her performance was just amazing. her voice, and skills >as a pianist, make me so jealous. not to mention that she is absolutely beautiful. i was less impressed when she sang with Jamie Foxx. not because of her, but because of jamie -- sure, he's GOOD, but not overly impressive to me.

probably the most awe-inspiring (in a good way) performance to me was Kanye West. i really need to obtain his cd. and maybe have his babies. heh. "jesus walks" has grown on me as a song, and the performance was just...wow. talk about entertaining and deep.

and his speech was classic, "they asked me what i'd do if i didn't win a grammy tonight -- i guess we'll never know."

of course, my favorite part of Kanye's performance was that the dancers/"churchgoers" were all in period costumes - and one guy still had his yellow livestrong wristband on.

speaking of all things Lance Armstrong-related...holy Sheryl Crow! that dress just barely covered her boobs. but i'll tell ya, she's got abs o' steel. i guess you have to, if you're dating a world-class athlete.

Green Day - outstanding. 'nuff said. and Billie Joe is HOTT! (wow, did i just sound like a squealing fangirl or what?)

now you know i love my boys with guitars, but did John Mayer really deserve to win "song of the year"? sorry, but no. "daughters" has got to be the most irritating song of 2004. it's cheesy, and boring, and a bit irking:

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do, yeah
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too

i'm sorry, but the last thing my dad wants to hear is about one of his daughters becoming a lover. that's just CREEPY. and it's song of the year.

now, i don't know about you, but i had heard NOTHING about the all-star tsunami tribute performance of "across the universe". all the hype was about JLo and Marc Anthony. which leads me to believe that this was a last minute addition to the program.

and boy did it sound it. they must have rehearsed what, maybe 3 or 4 times?

you could tell that most of the performers were reading the words to the song off of a teleprompter. norah jones sounded HORRIBLE. stevie wonder flubbed the first few words of his lines (which he also did during the tsunami telethon).

and velvet revolver as the backing band? an...interesting choice. they actually sounded quite good. even scott weiland, though his voice is nothing like it used to be. he breaks my heart.

honestly, though, the song made me cringe, it was so slip-shod. i turned to dave and said "please, turn it down, put it on mute, SOMETHING! it hurts!"

it was mentioned that the song could be downloaded off of iTunes and the money would be donated. dave said, "i hope this isn't the version you get when you buy it." NOT EVEN KIDDING. one can only hope that there was a studio version.

the southern rock tribute, in my opinion, was "eh" at best. i love my girl Gretchen Wilson, but i found myself getting really distracted by the dust settling on the television screen.

last, but certainly not least -- the Janis Joplin tribute. first of all, Joss Stone is nothing short of phenomenal. she is only 17 or 18 years old, and she's a white girl from england! but damn, she's got soul.

and then, out came Melissa Etheridge (whoa, pun not intended). she was amazing. at first i didn't remember why she was bald. i totally forgot that she's having treatment for breast cancer. bald as hell and she didn't give a fuck. she looked like she was having a blast. she rocked the house. she even changed "man" to "woman" in Piece of My Heart. that fuckin' ruled.

and i'm going to end this review abruptly a la Queen Latifah (and every other awards show host in history).

well, that's it! see ya next year!
