you can take the girl out of jersey, but you can't take the jersey out of the girl

part one of the "OMFG I GOT A PICTURE WITH HOWIE DAY" story, that actually doesn't contain Howie (yet)

it's a long story, so i'm going to break it down.
this would be part one.

the radio station show (known as a "Mixer", since it's Mix 95.7) was an acoustic performance by both The Calling and Howie Day. as a winner, i was allowed to bring 1 guest. since G couldn't go, i posted on the Howie Day Trading Board that if anyone was interested in going, to email me.

now, knowing my history with random internet meet-ups, i was REALLY putting myself at risk here. with my luck, it will be some psycho-stalker freakboy. but i figured, these are HOWIE fans -- how bad could they be?

luckily, a sweet girl, C, emailed me. we met up and took a cab to the studio. it was at the end of a teeny street...ok, an ALLEY, in south philadelphia. we were told to be there between 5-530. we arrived just about 5pm, and the door was locked. a bouncer-ish looking man came to the door and said "the artists aren't even here yet. we can't let anyone in until 545. come back then." he directed us to a dunkin' donuts a few blocks away.

well, the studio must be in cahoots with dunkin' donuts, because ALL the early arrivals started milling into the dn'd. C and i were making small talk. i kinda went into nervous-talking overdrive, because i hate awkward silences. so i try and push aside my shyness and just blab. overcompensate, i suppose. but i was asking HER questions about her life, etc., trying to get her to talk. eventually, it was all good.

we finally head back to the studio. this shin-dig is CATERED, it turns out, with cheesesteaks, soft pretzels (we're in philly, duh!). damn, if we'd only known, we wouldn't have chowed down at the dn'd! so we went into the main part of the studio, which was huge and open, with about 20 loveseats and stuffed armchairs - all 1970s patterns. it was hott. and comfy. i said to C "wake me up with someone starts playing a guitar."

i was fascinated by the whole scene. it really made me mentally kick my own ass for not staying as a communications major, for not applying to Emerson College or some sort of music/radio school.

anyway.

first up was The Calling. it wasn't the entire band - just the lead singer and 2 guitarists, since it was totally acoustic. Alex Band, the lead singer, is the SKINNIEST man i have ever seen upclose and personal. he must weigh about 90 pounds. he's so tiny. i had this urge to run the couple of blocks to dunkin' donuts and buy him a french kruller.

The Calling performed 4 songs, and inbetween there was some Q and A with the DJ and some audience members. they were REALLY REALLY good. Alex has SUCH an amazing voice. you don't hear many frontmen of popular bands who sing baritone. and he's just got a rich, warm quality to his voice. and as a girl who grew up a choir nerd being IN LOVE with more than one of the basses, i can appreciate some good pipes, you know what i'm sayin'?

after they were done, we (the audience) got to go up in groups of 6 or 8 and do promo shots with the band. they're going to be posted on the station's website, i guess. and we'll get copies emailed to us. i'll be sure to post all those pictures -- especially since i got to stand RIGHT NEXT TO ALEX! *swoons slightly* he's just barely as tall as i am, and i'm only 5'5 and a 1/2! he put his arm around me, so i put my arm around him. of course you may not see the snuggly goodness, because we were in the back row. the 2 guitarists were pretty quiet, but Alex was cracking jokes and just overall a really nice guy.

(and this is where part 1 ends. stay tuned for part 2.)
